There is big relief ahead for railway passengers. To make Tatkal ticket booking safer and more convenient, Indian Railways had earlier introduced Aadhaar-based OTP verification for online bookings. This move helped reduce fake accounts and made online ticket reservations more secure for genuine passengers.

But ticket touts soon found another way to exploit the system. Instead of booking tickets online, they started purchasing Tatkal tickets directly from railway station counters using fake IDs. Because of this, many genuine passengers struggled to get confirmed tickets during emergencies.

Now, the Railways has come up with a new solution to stop this malpractice completely.

Q-Mitra system introduced, pilot testing underway

Indian Railways has launched a new system called Q-Mitra to improve the Tatkal ticket booking process at counters. The system is currently being tested at Begusarai railway station in Bihar under the Sonpur division of the East Central Railway (ECR).

With this new arrangement, the Railways aims to eliminate the influence of touts at offline ticket counters and make the booking process fair for everyone.

What exactly is the Q-Mitra system?

Q-Mitra is basically a digital token-based queue management system created to control the heavy rush and confusion usually seen at Tatkal counters.

Under this system, only verified passengers will be able to get a token for booking tickets. To receive a token, passengers will have to register using their Aadhaar card and mobile number. Also, only one token can be generated using one Aadhaar number and one mobile number in a day.

How will the system work?

The process has been designed to ensure maximum transparency and security.

  1. Before the Tatkal counter opens, passengers will receive a digital token with a QR code on their registered mobile number.
  2. The passenger must carry this token to the Tatkal booking counter.
  3. At the counter, biometric verification will be done through a special authentication machine.
  4. Facial recognition technology will also be used. The face of the passenger standing at the counter must match the Aadhaar database. Only then will the Tatkal ticket be issued.
  5. Since the system relies on Aadhaar verification and facial authentication, agents and touts using fake identities will find it nearly impossible to misuse the booking system.

Major benefits passengers will get from Q-Mitra

Supports multiple languages
The system is available in several Indian languages including Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, and Punjabi, making it easier for passengers from different regions to use it comfortably.

Stronger protection against fraud
As the process is Aadhaar-linked, fake IDs or someone else’s documents cannot be used for ticket booking.

Facial verification for added security
Only the actual Aadhaar holder will be able to book Tatkal tickets at the counter through facial authentication.

Limit on token generation
Only one token per Aadhaar card can be issued in a day, preventing brokers from making bulk bookings.

Separate queues for AC and Non-AC tickets
To reduce crowding and confusion, different queues and tokens have been arranged for AC and Non-AC ticket bookings.

Can function without internet
The system is designed to work even in offline mode, ensuring smooth token generation even if internet connectivity is poor or unavailable.
